Skyrocketed ghost activity in Hoenn meant Rangers and Officers alike were dispatched in troves to handle sightings and restore public faith. Too many stories were circulating that this uptick was a result of the death toll in Sootopolis, which further destabilized civilians. Robin couldn't let the negative perception fester any longer. As an avid lover of ghosts, it was her sacred duty to protect ghosts in ecosystem and reputation alike. [break][break]

It helped to have a trusty ally in the endeavor, though she thought things must be mad to dispatch the Deputy so far from Dewford. "I hope there's a nugget of truth to this case," she confessed as they entered the forest under the half-moon's partial light. "I wanna see something scary."

Of course, he knew that Robin didn't have a negative bone in her body regarding ghosts. He remembered their first meeting and how excitedly she'd talked about ghost-types.

She nearly jumped at the sudden flutter of sound - but above them was a set of Noibats soaring into the night. She giggled, tinged with just a bit of nervousness. She loved being scared, but the anticipation was what really made it worthwhile. [break][break]

She looked to him with a conspiratorial glint. "What are you hoping for? Big monster? Angry spirit? Family of cannibals?" Their shadows seemed to stretch supernaturally long behind them under the moon's glow.

Montgomery felt his stomach churn at her suggestion. What a terrible idea. He was glad his old reliable was at his side, loaded and ready to fire if the occasion called for it.

"I guess somethin' tangible. But not fuckin' cannibals. Yuck."

He tilted his head up at the rustle of noibats flying away. As his attention turned back to the ground, something glinted ahead from the light of his flashlight. Like a pair of eyes, reflecting light of their lens ever so briefly.

She knows because of her own. This one, however, looks pinker and... sickly. It freezes as it gets a good look at the two of them. Then, it shoots out a hand and a poisonous sludge erupts from its palm.

[attr="class","monty"]sableye was a fairly common Pokemon Montgomery had seen from time to time in hoenn. He'd been called to a cave or two to evacuate people trapped by fear of the little creature.

This one seemed off.

"Why does it look like that-" Before his sentence could be finished, a purple sludge flung forward. He didn't have a way to protect them, but...

"breloom, stun spore it!"

From her Poke ball, the grass-type stood, charging static electricity. It formed to spores, dispersing in front of them to attempt to stun the sableye.

And buy them a minute to get away.

Dhelmise uses phantom force to generate a wave of shadow to consume the sludge. Meanwhile, Montgomery's pokemon throws a stun spore on the Sableye that leaves it vibrating with the urge to move. It's an effective paralysis, but Robin disagrees with Montgomery's implicit instruction to leave. [break][break]

"It's such a strange Sableye," she says with awe. "We should take it with us." She wondered why it was haunting the area. She wanted it for herself. It held a strange allure. She reached out to grab it despite the stun spores that covered it.

Montgomery's reaction successfully keeps her from touching the Sableye. The creature's toxic chain expands suddenly, then pops. Huh? [break][break]

The Sableye disappears into nothing before their very eyes, and the cackling of Zoroark fills the forest indiscriminately. "Damn it," she growls. "I saw people post about a Zoroark swarm that dispersed around here, but I thought they'd be gone by now. I want real scares," she complains to Montgomery. "That Sableye looked cool as hell." Nothing could stop her from chasing a scary thrill, but she had no power over trickster pokemon. [break][break]

She deflates. "Nevermind, I guess. I'm sorry I brought you out here for a bust."
